NSUK Nursing Agency – Latest Nurses’ Jobs Vacancy News

Nursing Services of the UK, the UK nursing agency approved by NHS Buying Solutions, has a range of nursing agency jobs available for February and March 2012. Registration with NSUK is free. Benefits include a personal on-line work diary each nurse or HCA can use to notify NSUK of their availability for work shifts. Candidates can also manage their compliance for employment and receive alerts when mandatory training and certification falls due.

The latest listed vacancies at Nursing Services of the UK include the following:-

1. Community Nurses, District Nurses and Health Visitors throughout London, as well as Kent and Sussex. NSUK can offer short and longer term assignments, at times to suit, whether full time or part time or even just one shift as and when convenient. Candidates will need to be fully compliant to NHS standards in order to be booked for these assignments. Contact franscois.vanstaden@NSofUK.com

 2. Band 5 Registered General Nurses and Band 2 Care Workers in Manchester and surrounding areas who have recent, and a minimum of six months’ experience of working within acute hospital environments. NSUK can offer regular shifts, both days and nights as well as weekend work. Compliance to NHS standards is essential. Contact ashley.smith@NSofUK.com

3. Band 5 Registered General Nurses to work in the Surrey and Essex areas. Candidates will need to be competent to work within acute hospital environments and compliant to NHS standards. To secure shifts. Contact adam.padayachee@NSofUK.com

NSUK is reminding nurses and HCAs to ensure that their personal on-line files with the agency are kept up to date. If candidates are working regular shifts for NSUK within the NHS, they must be fully compliant to NHS standards at all times. When relevant documentation is due to expire - such as training certificates, CRB or Occupational Health yearly review, all of which expire annually - it is imperative to update the training and/ or renew relevant documentation before it expires, the agency says.

If candidates wait until certification has expired, all forthcoming shifts are automatically cancelled, and staff are then unable to be booked for shifts until the updated documentation is in place.

There are many candidates who have reached a basic level of compliance to work with private clients of NSUK, the agency says, but who have not yet reached the top level of compliance – PASA compliant - which enables them to work within NHS settings. The agency emphasises the benefits for candidates of working to achieve compliance to NHS standards, which will further improve opportunities for work.

CRB Web Renewal in Nine Days with NSUK for UK Registered Nurses

Agency nurses can now apply for CRB Criminal records Bureau checks on the internet with the NSUK - Nursing Services of the UK - following the release of the latest application update of the agency’s web-based system, A24 Connect.

This new advance in CRB renewal will speed up dramatically the turnaround of Criminal Records checks, the agency says, to ensure that all its registered medical staff remain compliant and are able to work at all times. NSUK, a division of the A24 Group, estimates that renewals will take from just nine days, where there are no previous convictions or cautions present on the applicant’s record.

Penny Streeter OBE is managing director of the A24 Group, which employs a dedicated development team of 18 software developers.

This is a further stage in our constant investment in healthcare staffing technology and services – to ensure that we remain the leading agency group. We’re one of the largest users of the Criminal Records Bureau and process in excess of 900 enhanced disclosures every month and have worked with the bureau to develop our CRB online module.”

The requirement by the NHS is that all agency workers must hold an enhanced CRB disclosure that is less than 12 months old. With current delays within the CRB system, says the agency, this has meant that some candidates currently have to re-apply four months before expiration.

Agency workers registered with NSUK, can apply by logging onto www.a24connect.co.uk , the unique web portal that enables medical staff to access work information and interact with the agency online 24 hours a day. Web visitors are prompted if their CRB certification is due for renewal and can then complete an on-line application form.

Agency staff simply log onto www.a24connect.co.uk and follow the prompts to complete the online CRB application form. An electronic payment is then required for the CRB fee, currently £46.20. The agency countersigns the document once it is received and the application is automatically sent to the CRB. Candidates can log into A24 Connect to track progress at any time.

NSUK, advises that with the introduction of the web-based service, applications on CRB printed forms cannot be accepted by the agency, and all submissions and payments must be on-line.

A24 Connect is an advanced web-based system that offers Agency nurses and HCAs an on-line work diary and range of advanced service features to help personnel to save time and ensure compliance. Candidates can update their availability for work, change bank information, download timesheets, view their compliance status, manage work history and references, and provide feedback.

How to be a Health Care Assistant (HCA): Ten Tips

Nursing Services of the UK (NSUK) is recruiting healthcare assistants (HCAs) for temporary UK agency work. So what experience is required to be an HCA – and how much of a help are NVQ qualifications in gaining employment?

There is still demand in many parts of the UK for HCAs in a range of healthcare settings - including hospitals, care homes and for domiciliary homecare. The advantage of agency work is that HCAs can often earn extra pay, working when and where they want, to meet family and other commitments. Rates of pay at the NSUK nursing agency range up to £21.60 per hour for senior care support workers with an NVQ3. Registration is through the web site at Nursing Services of the UK.

The role of the healthcare assistant is varied and can include working alongside nurses as a nursing auxiliary, or without direct supervision, in a care home or domestic setting.

The types of duties can include: washing and dressing patients; feeding; helping people to mobilise; toileting; bed making; generally assisting with patients overall comfort; monitoring patients conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respiration's and weight. Nursing healthcare assistants usually work a 37.5-hour week on a shift or rota system, often including nights and weekends.

NSUK offers these top tips on working as an HCA:-

  1. Work experience required: if you are unqualified, to register with a reputable nursing agency requires at least six months’ UK care experience, with two good clinical job references that show that you are able to perform as a care assistant to the required level. Many candidates apply in the first instance to work in a nursing home or hospital setting under supervision. This offers immediate employment and also the opportunity to get the training and experience required by agencies.

  2. Gain an NVQ: Hospitals, care homes and other clients of the NSUK agency now often require candidates to have NVQ qualifications, often at Level 2 or above. Further Education colleges run NVQ training in social care. If you contact your local FE college it will be able to advise on the best route to obtain the relevant qualification. After completing a course (lasting several months), you can supply tutors’ job references to support your job application to the agency.

  3. Enrol for extra training: in addition to the NVQ, you can improve your skills - and the range and pay of the work for which you can apply – with short courses such as in phlebotomy (venipuncture and cannulation), to qualify for drawing blood samples.

  4. Consider agency work: once you have gained the relevant experience, then at Nursing Services of the UK you can earn extra pay and work flexibly, usually at hours that suit you. The agency employs staff within different staff ‘bands’ – such as care support, senior care and NVQ3 qualified staff bands. Pay relates to the band and also the time of the day or week when you work – night work has higher pay rates than daytime, and weekend shifts attract good rates too.

  5. Register with several agencies, just once: by registering with NSUK, you will be eligible to work with a number of other agencies in the same group, if you choose, to increase your work opportunities. However, it’s important to note that you must meet and maintain the required compliance standards, and that a good level of spoken and written English is essential, to help ensure safety standards are maintained at all times.

  6. At registration, supply all the information required: NSUK provides a detailed list of documents you will need to present for registration. To help you through the process, the agency meets with all candidates locally and will review and copy the documents needed. Initial registration should always be started on-line through the NSUK web site. Documents required include: a completed CRB; a detailed NSUK application form; and job references.

  7. Keep your registrations current: once you have registered with the nursing agency, ensure that your annual certifications are up to date – whether for training, CRB or other requirements.

  8. Let the agency know when you are free to work: NSUK’s on-line web diary enables HCAs to confirm when they are available. It’s worth updating the diary at least once a week. Be flexible: if NSUK knows that you will accept work at short notice - or will work some evenings, weekends or Bank Holidays - you will get more, higher-paying shifts.

  9. Stay in touch: find out which NSUK consultants deal with the area where you want to work. E-mail details of the names of the towns and hospitals. NSUK’s consultants are there to help, and when they get to know you and the type of work you want, it will increase work opportunities. It’s worth registering for NSUK’s Facebook and Twitter pages so that you are up to date on agency news and job opportunities.

  10. Consider your career: are you looking for specific types of work or experience? If you are, do discuss this with your NSUK consultant, as the agency may be able to help, if you meet the standards required by clients for relevant shifts. Again, consider short training courses such as in phlebotomy.

Winter Weather brings surge in Demand for Agency Nurses

With many doctors and nurses struggling to get into work because of the snow and ice on the roads, there has been a major surge in demand for the temporary nurses supplied by Nursing Services of the UK. The nursing agency can find jobs for nurses of all specialisations and is arranging accommodation options where an agency nurse is willing to remain at an NHS hospital and complete further shifts until the snow clears.

Nursing Services of the UK is working closely with hospitals throughout England to meet their staffing shortfall. The agency is approved by the NHS Buying Solutions, National Agency Nursing & Care Framework Agreement. The NHS Confederation warns that there are concerns about the weeks ahead. Nigel Edwards, policy director at the NHS Confederation, said:-

" NHS Trusts across the country are reporting extremely high levels of demand. Local health services have well developed plans for dealing with the usual pressures of winter, but the scale of demand is significantly greater than expected at this time of year or for these weather conditions."

Nursing Services of the UK is contacting their bank of agency nurses to find out if they are available and able to travel to one or more NHS Hospitals locally for shifts. The agency is actively phoning hospitals on behalf of nurses to inform the hospital of their availability and skills and then book them in for shifts.

The increase in demand is right across the country, although there are particular problems in Surrey, Kent, the Midlands and Manchester regions.

In the meantime we would expect anyone who considered themselves to be at risk to approach their GP or the substantive NHS trust that they are working in.

Nursing Services of the UK saves South African Football Team

Nursing Services of the UK stepped in and paid for the air travel for the South African football team today when their government funding was suddenly withdrawn for the flight of the 10-man squad to the Homeless World Cup in Italy next week. Once homeless herself, managing director Penny Streeter’s company A24 Group is a major investor in South Africa.
Penny Streeter lived in a homeless refuge with her three children before starting her company in 1996. She is founder and managing director of A24 Group, a medical staffing agency with a turnover of £70 million (year to June 2009), and no loans or external investors. The company opened offices in South Africa in 2004 and launched an £11 million investment programme.

The Homeless World Cup, Milan 2009, runs from 6th to 13thSeptember, with 500 players from 48 nations. An estimated 100 million people worldwide are homeless (Source: United Nations Commission on Human Rights, 2005). www.homelessworldcup.org

"Well I read that funding by the City of Cape Town stopped because of huge demands on their budgets in the recession, so I felt I had to step in. Homelessness is a terrible waste of good people, usually overtaken by events with which they just can’t cope - in the UK, one in four of the homeless are ex-military. It's a problem which should get more attention, given British involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq," said Penny Streeter.

South Africa hosted the Homeless World Cup in Cape Town 2006. The domestic league now involves 100 volunteers and activities in various communities of Cape Town and the Western Cape focusing on education, social support and HIV awareness for street children. The league has grown to involve over 700 players in 55 teams: 50 per cent of the players are currently living on the street, a number of them are in drug rehabilitation programmes and others in institutions for street people.

SAHSS (South African Homeless Street Soccer) has successfully used football to foster healthy individual development, teach positive values and life skills, strengthen education, and prevent disease through education (particularly HIV/AIDS).

A third of nurses may refuse to have the swine flu jab

According to a poll by 'Nursing Times' magazine, one third of UK nurses may refuse to have the swine flu jab. Of 1,500 readers, 30 per cent would not say 'yes' to the vaccine, while 33 per cent said 'maybe'. Just 37 per cent said that they would definitely have the jab.

Of those who said they would refuse the jab, 60 per cent said their main reason was concern about the safety of the vaccine. A further 31 per cent said they did not consider the risks to their health from swine flu to be great enough, while 9 per cent thought they would not be able to take time off work to get immunised. Some 91 per cent described themselves as frontline nurses.

Professor David Salisbury, the Department of Health's director of immunisation, said it was unfortunate nurses would 'knowingly leave themselves at risk'.

The survey comes after health chiefs said doctors should watch out for cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome when the vaccine is introduced in October. The syndrome, which affects around 1,500 people a year in the UK, attacks the nervous system and can result in temporary paralysis.

Nursing Agencies' Medical Staff in Peak Demand as Full-Time Vacancies Soar

The Vacancies for nurses, midwives, hospital doctors and dentists in the UK have increased for the first time in five years Increasing patient demand, the lack of training places, staff retirement and changes in immigration laws are all thought to responsible for the situation.

With the pressures on full-time staff, agency nurses are in peak demand by Nursing Services of the UK. The agency has now recruited dozens of additional compliance staff to assist the process of registration and ensure that candidates can be available for work as soon as possible. The agency has one of the most advanced on-line registration systems of any UK nursing agency to enable medical staff to manage their own availability and receive notification of more work, more easily than ever before, according to the agency.

Vacant nursing jobs increased from 2.5 to 3.1 per cent – of which 0.7 per cent were long-term, up from 0.5 per cent in the previous year. The chief executive of the Royal College of Nursing has expressed concern about long-term vacancies: even unfilled short-term vacancies leave nurses under unsustainable pressure, he said, with higher workloads, leaving staff too busy to provide the standard of care they want to offer.

Other Medical Staffing News:-

New European rules limiting junior doctors to 48 hours a week, which recently came into force, are also thought to have added to the pressure on staffing for healthcare providers. Senior doctors have called for the restrictions to be suspended until after the NHS has dealt with the H1N1 outbreak in the UK.

The latest vacancy figures, which look at jobs unfilled on March 31 this year, found that over 5 per cent of all NHS medical posts, which includes hospital doctors and dentists, were vacant. This is up from 3.6 per cent the previous year. The proportion which had been vacant for three months – which is considered an indication of hard-to-fill posts - was 1.5 per cent, up from 0.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, vacancies among GPs rose 1.2 to 1.6 per cent, although long-term vacancies remained broadly the same.

Measles and Mumps requirements for Nursing Agency Staff

Agency nurses working in the UK must be fully compliant with Department of Health Measles and Mumps requirements to be eligible for work with the A24 Group. The Department of Health has now written to Trusts to inform them that all healthcare professionals should be able to prove immunity. Visit www.nsofuk.com

Candidates will need to produce written evidence in the form of a compliant certificate of fitness. This requires that candidates have the following evidence available: proof of positive antibody for Measles and Rubella; or that they have received two MMR Vaccinations; or that they have received a series of two Measles, Rubella and also Mumps Vaccinations (so 6 in total).

Also, if a candidate has a positive antibody for Measles and Rubella but his or her mumps are negative or equivocal then appropriate action must be taken as mumps immunity is still necessary. For more details contact us on this web site: www.nsofuk.com

The latest figures show the uptake of the MMR triple vaccine in the community has risen slightly to 89.6% from 83.4%.

However, they are still a long way off the 95% level needed to provide "herd immunisation" and prevent the disease taking hold in the community among unvaccinated people.

Some states in the USA now have a requirement for children to be vaccinated before they start at school. The country has a 99% uptake of MMR among school entry children.
